Hair comes in all shapes, sizes, textures, colors…the possibilities are endless and it’s all a personal choice! While your hair is just another reflection of your expression, it is also important to know what causes your hair to shine or wither away. We’ve compiled a list of the 10 most common hair myths debunked by science, all for the sake of your best mane!

YOUR HAIR BECOMES IMMUNE TO SHAMPOOS AND CONDITIONERS

While your hair can’t actually develop an intolerance to your hair care products, there are a number of other environmental factors that can influence the effectiveness of your shampoos and conditioners. For example, changes in the season can affect your hair’s dryness, causing more breakage and splitting. There are experts that say changing your hair products TOO often can throw off the pH balance, causing more breakage or dry scalp.

Now, if you recently colored your hair and you need certain products that preserve that pigmentation, there are certainly times when switching up your shampoo and conditioner is helpful to preserving hair changes. In this case, most often you would switch to a more hydrating hair wash.

HAIR OILS MAKE YOUR HAIR GREASY

Oils produce different effects depending on hair type, however, how you apply your hair oil is key. Hair oil is designed for application on the mid-lengths and ends in order to preserve hair strength, ease the detangling and provide shine to your hair. When applied directly to the scalp, oil will most likely make your hair look greasier than it really is.

For those seeking to hydrate their scalp, there are plenty of hair masks, formulated to soak into your hair and then rinse after.

SPLIT ENDS ARE REPAIRABLE

The sad truth is that split ends cannot be repaired. Once the hair is split, there’s no going back. There are of course ways in which you can reduce the frequency of split ends occurring. These include getting a trim when split ends start to become noticeable. Another way to prevent splitting is to be sure your hair is well-hydrated. This means anything from hair masks to deep conditioning, to avoiding hot styling tools and even lowering the shower temperature.
All in all, a much-needed trim and a hydrated scalp are key to reducing the number of split ends and breakage.

YOUR HAIR NEEDS TO BE PARTED A CERTAIN WAY

Sometimes when we try to move our part a different way, our hair doesn’t seem to cooperate. Contrary to popular belief, your hair can be parted in many different areas and there is no ONE WAY each person’s hair is supposed to be parted.

When switching up your part, it’s helpful to do when your hair is wet and you may even use a mousse to help control the direction of the hair. Blow-dry your hair in the direction you want it to fall. Hair parts are really a ‘Choose your Own Adventure’!

NATURAL OILS ARE GOOD FOR YOUR HAIR

While natural oils such as avocado and coconut oil are healthy alternatives in using cooking oil, they are not as effective on your hair. These natural oils are not capable of soaking into the hair shaft and strengthening the hair as most hair oils are designed to do. They can also leave a sticky residue and tend to make your hair look and feel greasy. When choosing the right hair oil for your locks, look at jojoba, Moroccan, and argan oil which work deep into your hair strands to brighten, preserve and promote strong, healthy hair over time.
